Zack Hancock explains why Denis Noble and James Shapiro are wrong about evolution

Zack Hancock has posted a lengthy (2 hours) video explaining why Denis Noble, James Shapiro, and the rest of The Third Way of Evolution crowd are wrong about evolution. You may not agree with everything Zack says but if you are really interested in following this debate then you should watch the entire video.

If you want to get to the juicy parts first then watch the section on "Chapter VII: Crusade against genetic reductionism" beginning with a short introduction at 1:35. In the last few minutes Zack gets into motive by asking why Denis Noble and James Shaprio seem to be so comfortable with supporters like Intelligent Design Creationists.

Have watched this -- it's pretty good, if a bit long. I have small quibbles with some of the points, but in general it does a good job of explaining the context and emphasizing the lack of substance in the Noble/Shapiro arguments. Actually their Third Way website (thethirdwayofevolution.com) highlights about 60 scientists, who between them have almost every possible issue with the Modern Synthesis. Some are well within that Synthesis, it's just that they feel its current form does not give enough importance to the processes they study. But the Third Way site was founded by Noble and Shapiro, so it is right to associate their views with it, If you try to make a coherent theory out of the views of all the site's adherents, it reminds one of Stephen Leacock's famous statement that "Lord Ronald said nothing; he flung himself from the room, flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions." I particularly liked that last bit of the video.

Hi Joe! I am currently pursuing my bachelors studies in Zoology, and in evolutionary biology, I am particularly more interested in speciation. Kindly, can you suggest which route is best to take after bachelors... for Masters, and PhD in order to study both patterns and processes of speciation more thoroughly ? I mean should I go take route of population genetics, or Ecology & Evolution, or organismal biology , or your major field i.e Phylogenetics ?
My own university professors are creationists , and they aren't interested to guide me, so you are the best who can suggest me more clearly, as I don't know there exists any living person who has contributed to both pattrens and processes of evolution more than you, Joe! :)

And, another thing is I see population genetics is core heart of contemporary evolutionary theory, and pop-gen is full of mathematics. Sadly, I'm very weak in mathematics as biology students don't study mathematics after matriculation. So, can you also please suggest me that which kind of mathematics is used in population genetics, and also in which particular branches of mathematics should I pay more attention in order to understand population genetics , and phylogenetics from basic level. I've to learn both of these sub-fields on my own as quality of evolution education is very very poor in my country Pakistan, and there'd be hardly any professor who is expert in evolutionary biology , here. :(

Mohammed Abdullah: instead of using this comment section, could you send me these questions in an emal (for the address, look at my homepage at felsenst.github.io where the email address is in my Curriculumm Vitae.

Muhhammad Abdullah: The short answer is to find someone (with a job) who studies speciation and whose work you admire and write to them for advice, hopefully to get them to want you as a grad student. Or at least that's how I did it.
