What? Me Worry?

Alfred E. Neuman may not have had a care in the world but most of us worry about something. John Brockman of The Edge asks his bevy of followers this question for 2013: 2013: WHAT *SHOULD* WE BE WORRIED ABOUT?.

You'd think that most of the responses would be along the lines of global climate change, poverty, disease, crime, war, or the possibility that Earth might be destroyed by an asteroid impact. You'd think that the treatment of women in third (and second) world countries and the fanaticism of religious extremists might generate more than a few responses.

You would be wrong.

Here's what the best minds in the Western world came up with. I read most of them and I don't think I'll lose any sleep over any of these worries. I will, however, continue to lose sleep over women being raped in India and young children being shot to death in Connecticut.

I used to think that we were getting past our rape culture in North America. Then I came across this story from Steubenville, Ohio. What kept me up at night wasn't the incident itself, but how the denial went right up the food chain. School officials, the local sheriff, even the prosecuting attorney all lined up to defend the attackers. There's not just women in India to worry about.

Larry Moran said...

I'll let you worry about that. :-)

When it comes to things that I really worry about, starvation in Africa and people getting bombed in Syria (among other things) take precedence.

"the possibility that Earth might be destroyed by an asteroid impact"

Destroyed? I don't think anybody's detected any object large enough to destroy Earth that is also on a path likely to produce a collision in any of our lifetimes. It seems conceivable (slightly) that humanity might be wiped out by such means, but not all life here, and not the planet itself.

But certainly it would be a good idea to have a plan in place to divert dangerous objects, before we need to put such a plan into action. But humans don't seem to like plans.

outlandish and inane comment from LF.

Luther Flint said...

What's outlandish, and inane, is fantasy hate speech about a rape culture when it's perfectly clear no such thing exists. In a rape culture there would be no outrage about rape the way there has been recently. Compare, eg, the recent headlines the world over saying "burger eaten in high street - vegetarian groups call for action". Didn't see it? That's because there was no such headline. And there was no such headline because we live in a burger eating culture where people eating burgers is acceptable and causes no outrage. As I said, compare and contrast...

Hm. Most of those do not actually sound as if they are addressing the question.

I do think that there is a reason to worry, because there are too many humans using too many limited resources, and I have yet to be convinced that it is possible to feed (much less clothe, house and commute) us all once cheap oil runs out.

andyboerger said...

Luther, leaving all other considerations aside, the fact remains that in your comment to jethroelfman you told him to 'stop raping', insinuating that he is a rapist.
You went on to write in another comment, 'clearly a rapist'.
However 'humorously' you imagine this should be interpreted, it's a just plain awful thing to write.

Luther Flint said...

All men are rapists according to the ideology of hate he is preaching. And all sex is rape according to that fantasy. That particular lunacy being based on the Marxian notion of false consciousness - in this case the false consciousness generated by the patriarchy which makes "informed" consent impossible because informed consent can only come from real, as opposed to false, consciousness. Given this, then, I see no problem in reminding buffoons of the logical outcome of their hate-filled belief system - especially when they spout it freely.

The whole truth said...

luther, in your zeal to be a deranged jerk you have missed the fact that a culture doesn't include every person on Earth. jethroelfman's comments obviously refer to people who belong to what can be labeled as the 'rape culture' because they don't care about rape victims or they even further victimize them. I'm all for innocent until proven guilty in a court of law but some people deny the obvious, blame the victim, support the perpetrator(s) no matter what, and even orchestrate cover-ups.

Piotr Gąsiorowski said...

Oh, come on, TWT. The boys were just being boys. The girl would gladly have expressed her informed consent and would have enjoyed every moment with the lads, had she been conscious during her romantic adventure (and if she wasn't, who's to blame?). The sheriff and the local cops understand that young people need to develop their sexuality freely, the way they did in their young years. I wonder if Luther has a girl friend. If so, he might want to ask her what she thinks of the Steubenville incident.

Luther Flint said...

@TWT
What sense can be made of the notion of an "X culture" when it refers only to those small minority of who do, or condone, X and when the culture at large totally rejects and abhors X and vilifies those who do X? What possible purpose (meaning) is there in talking about an X culture in such cases? We might as well say we have a cannibalism culture. We don't. Nor do we have a rape culture or anything like it it.

Btw, don't believe everything you read.

Luther Flint said...

@Piotr
Here's what won't happen in Steubenville if the boys are found guilty. They won't become talk show celebrities world-wide. Their actions will not be celebrated and gleefully joked about on day-time TV. They won't be voted Men of the Year by major newspapers or be given other awards. And that's because to get such honours and celebrity status for a horrific sexual assault, in our culture, you have to be a woman who has done it to a man. Just saying.

Piotr Gąsiorowski said...

That's what won't happen worldwide. But I am confident they will be local heroes forever in Steubenville County. Incidentally, there is an interesting comment about Steubenville in Wikipedia:

Steubenville has had a reputation for political corruption. The U.S. Department of Justice alleged that the city and police force had subjected numerous individuals to "excessive force, false arrests, charges, and reports" and had engaged in practices regarding "improper stops, searches, and seizures." The report from the Department also stated that excessive force was levied against individuals who witnessed incidents of police misconduct, and against those who were known critics of the city and its police force. Those individuals were also falsely detained if the city and the police agreed that they were "likely to complain of abuse." It also stated that the officers involved also falsified reports and tampered with official police recorders so that "misconduct would not be recorded."

Aha! Don't mess with the Steubenville police force. But it seems there are real crimes (criticising the city and its cops) and petty misdemeanours (having fun at a party).

...to get such honours and celebrity status for a horrific sexual assault, in our culture, you have to be a woman who has done it to a man.

Ever wondered why? "Man bites dog" -- that is news!

Luther Flint said...

The idea that they will be local heroes if convicted is so ridiculous that it scarcely needs to be addressed. Suffice to say that convicted rapists are vilified. And the fact you don't seem to know this suggest nothing more than that the term "complete dildo" could well have been invented for you.

As for the big long paragraph you cited - yes, police corruption, how surprising, and your point is?

And finally, you seem to unaware about the stats for, for example, domestic violence in which it appears "men biting dogs", to use your analogy, is as common (perhaps more common) that dogs biting men. But why would you know that? Why would you actually know anything about the stuff you sound off about? And so once again the phrase "complete dildo" comes to mind.

Diogenes said...

And finally, you seem to unaware about the stats for, for example, domestic violence in which it appears "men biting dogs", to use your analogy, is as common (perhaps more common) that dogs biting men.

If I understand Luther's analogy, "man bites dog" = women raping men.

So Luther, the genius, is asserting that women raping men is "as common (perhaps more common)" than men raping women.

There now. For a moment, I thought women were vulnerable and victimized. Luckily, Luther has made it clear that women are the vicitimzers.

Perhaps Luther wants us to prosecute and imprison the 16-year-old girl in Steubenville for the crime of being anally penetrated while totally unconscious due to the roofie the athletes put in her drink, then being carried unconscious to one party after another, two held in the private homes of ADULT ASSISTANT COACHES of the football, until she was finally dumped on her parent's lawn like a sack of potatoes.

We must stop these out-of-control women who horribly go into a criminal unconscious state and then, limp and unresponsive, engulf our penises with their criminal rectums.

Men of the world, rise up now, lest you, too, be assaulted by the anus of an unconscious 16-year-old girl!

Luther is our leader. Rise up!

Diogenes said...

Wasn't there a case 3-4 years ago in Southern California, I think San Diego, where two sons of an official were charged with rape?

I think they were the sons of either the sherriff, or the district attorney-- and their dad was a complete asshole who aggressively attacked and smeared the victim. The girls in the high school called the victim a whore who asked for it-- if I recall she was intoxicated and unconscious at the time of the assault, but the boys' defense was that she consented to rape before passing out.

I'm trying to remember the names of the accused, but it escapes me.

Luther Flint said...

No, it's not women raping men - although that does happen to. Bunt since I clearly stated "domestic violence" it clear that's what I was talking about. (Can't you read you clown?) And no, I'm not saying women are the victimizers, I'm saying that both men and women are both victims and victimizers. Unclear why you find it so hard to grasp such a simple point. (It actually is clear, see my last point below.)

And no, of course the girl in Steubenville shouldn't be prosecuted unless the rape claims turn out to be completely false in the way, eg, the Duke lacrosse allegations turned out to be completely false. This does, however, seem unlikely in this case.

Re your last point, I do think the men of the world need to stand up to arseholes like you who refuse to believe a woman can ever do wrong, who refuse to believe men can ever do right, and who spout their hate-filled ideology at every opportunity.

Piotr Gąsiorowski said...

We were talking about rape, R-A-P-E, not, "for example", domestic violence. They are not the same, nor are the relevant stats, and I'm sure you know it full well, otherwise why shift the topic?

As for dildoes, what comes to your mind and what it does to your brain is your problem, not mine, but I do sympathise.

Luther Flint said...

No, I was talking about a man having his penis cut off in the post you responded to with your man bite dog analogy. Thus if you were responding to the point I made about celebrity status being afforded women who abuse men then you were talking about a case of horrendous domestic/sexual violence and not rape. But then, how would a complete dildo like you even know what you were talking about.

Luther Flint said...

@Piotr
And, if you read my post that the prick diogenes responded to, then you will see quite clearly that I was talking about the stats for domestic violence. Go check it out you half-witted cunt.

Diogenes said...

Thank goodness for people like Luther Flint. They are golden. We can use them as perfect examples of the social consequences of believing in Poof Theory.

I do think the men of the world need to stand up to arseholes like you who refuse to believe a woman can ever do wrong, who refuse to believe men can ever do right, and who spout their hate-filled ideology at every opportunity.

Yes, that is a perfect description of my position. I completely believe that "a woman can ever do wrong" and men can never do right.

That's exactly what I wrote in my comments above. I'll just find a quote where I say what Luther says I said. Oh wait...

Diogenes said...

@Luther:

Here is what you wrote, addressing Piotr:

the stats for, for example, domestic violence in which it appears "men biting dogs", to use your analogy

Here is Piotr's analogy, referred to by you:

...a horrific sexual assault, in our culture, you have to be a woman who has done it to a man.

Ever wondered why? "Man bites dog"

Piotr clearly states "Man bites dog" = "horrific sexual assault" committed by women against men.

Luther says: domestic violence in which it appears "men biting dogs", to use your analogy

But Piotr's analogy is "Man bites dog" = "horrific sexual assault" committed by women against men, and Luther says he's using Piotr's analogy.

Moreover, domestic violence commonly includes sexual assault. So your reference to domestic violence does not modify Piotr's analogy, which you said you're using.

At any rate, you clearly believe that men getting their penises cut off is just as common as women being sexually assaulted.

Luther Flint said...

Since you didn't have any qualms about distorting my claims in a ridiculous manner, I don't see why I should have to represent yours in a scrupulously accurate fashion.

Diogenes said...

Note to all:

Luther clearly believes that men getting their penises cut off is just as common as women being sexually assaulted.

I think we agree this belief is related to his support for Poof Theory.

But which is cause and which is effect?

1. But does Poof Theory cause his support for strange sexual ideas?

2. Or do his strange sexual ideas cause his support for Poof Theory?

We need to do an internet poll. I vote for 2. What think ye.

Luther Flint said...

@Diogenes
Re you last point - yes, sexual violence and domestic violence committed by women against men. Not rape committed by women against men. And no, I don't believe men getting their penis cut off by women is as common as men assaulting women sexually or otherwise. I believe that women assaulting men is just as common (maybe more so) as men assaulting women. Thus I reject piotr's absurd suggestion that the reason some horrendous acts by women become famous is because they are so rare. And even if that was true it would hardly explain the celebrity/heroine status afforded some of these women. And when we note that such a status is sometimes afforded women in such cases, but never to men, it is unclear what basis piotr could possibly have for claiming that the steubenville boys will be local heroes for evermore.

Luther Flint said...

Note to diogenes.
I do not believe men getting their penises cut off by women is as common as women being sexually assaulted. I believe, because it's true, that women are just as likely (perhaps more likely) to be the perpetrators of domestic violence. Unclear why, unless you're mad, which is likely, you find it so hard to understand that simple claim.

Diogenes said...

And even if that was true it would hardly explain the celebrity/heroine status afforded some of these women. And when we note that such a status is sometimes afforded women in such cases, but never to men

Sure. You mean like the guy whose penis was cut off, who was interviewed on multiple talk shows, and later became a porn star with his reattached frankenpenis?

I believe that women assaulting men is just as common (maybe more so) as men assaulting women.

Yeah, well you have a really low threshold of evidence. Translation: you stupid.

Luther Flint said...

But no man has ever been afforded honorable tv celebrity status on the basis of committing horrific sexual attacks. No man gets voted 'man of the year' for committing such acts. And re domestic violence, the fact that there is a fairly even gender split in terms of victims/perpetrators is fairly well established - just because your ideological views prevent you from believing this doesn't mean shit.

Here's a video about the issue and about society's views on it (key commentary at 1:25):

Rapey will no doubt be outraged by yet another story of an unconscious teenage girl assaulting and victimizing innocent young men by engulfing their innocent penises with her unconscious rectum.

I found the story about the rape in Orange County, the Haidl brothers case. Two of the three rapists were teenage sons of an ultra-wealthy assistant sheriff, who spent millions of dollars on their defense based entirely on smearing the victim as a slut who asked to be raped (by being dressed provocatively) before she passed out.

Many teenage girls in the community attacked the girl and defended the boys. The assistant sheriff's son video'ed his rape of the unconscious girl, and the teenage girls who attacked the female victim could see she was unconscious in the video.

But Rapey told us above that there is no such thing as "rape culture", and if you think so, you hate all men:

Rapey: The idea that they [men] will be local heroes if convicted is so ridiculous that it scarcely needs to be addressed. Suffice to say that convicted rapists are vilified.

Rapey also explains that we are haters if we defend unconscious women who assaulted innocent penises by engulfing them with their comatose rectums.

Rapey becomes furious if we assert that "informed" consent is impossible for an unconscious woman, who has had roofies or grain alcohol slipped into her drink by her rapists and who passed out before being repeatedly sodomized.

All men are rapists according to the ideology of hate [that rape culture exists] he [TWT] is preaching. And all sex is rape according to that fantasy. That particular lunacy being based on the Marxian notion of false consciousness - in this case the false consciousness generated by the patriarchy which makes "informed" consent impossible

Rapey calls us Marxists who preach an "ideology of hate"-- why, because we don't believe the unconscious anus of a comatose women can give "informed" consent to the penis, pool cue, Snapple bottle etc. penetrating it, while the penis-owner is making a video of the unconscious anus' horrible assault upon his gonads.

This is from the Haidl Case in OC:

Jane Doe was sitting in a Southern California community-college classroom when her criminal-justice professor ignited a debate about the infamous 2002 Haidl gang rape that won international attention. Three young men (then ages 17 and 18) got a then-16-year-old girl intoxicated on booze and marijuana to the point of unconsciousness, stripped her, and then videotaped their sexual assault... they threw her limp body on a pool table and, in a despicable coup de grâce, repeatedly shoved a Snapple bottle, apple-juice can, lit cigarette and a pool stick into her vagina and anus. [OC Weekly]

Rapey is no doubt outraged by yet another example of these out-of-control teenage women who assault innocent beverage containers with their unconscious anuses.

Rapey should rise up and defend innocent glassware from the constant assaults of these unconscious female rectums.

Glassware of the world, rise up! Rapey is your champion.

Diogenes said...

There's no evidence of any "rape culture" in the facts shown below.

Everybody expected that Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl—a chain smoker with a cocktail near-permanently attached to his hand and a scowl on his emaciated face—would do everything he could to keep his son out of prison following the arrests. But few people could've anticipated the extent to which Haidl's legal defense team—totaling more than a dozen defense lawyers, including a former state Supreme Court justice, a retired FBI agent and, get this, a publicist—would go.

Private investigators aggressively tailed and photographed [Jane] Doe and her parents for years. A poster was circulated in Doe's neighborhood soliciting dirt on her. Her medical records were illegally released to reporters. She was repeatedly called a "slut," and her female friends were privately convinced to alter their stories to match the defense's case.
[OC Weekly]

Nope. There's no evidence of any "rape culture" in the above paragraph.

Haidl brought in a veteran Los Angeles porno star to testify that Doe was faking unconsciousness in the video while playing the role of a corpse. Not satisfied, he also paid a New York doctor to claim with all seriousness that Doe didn't need to give oral consent to the gangbang because her rectum had done so when it accepted the insertion of foreign objects.

Now, you might think it's ridiculous to believe that an unconscious woman's anus can give consent to foreign objects being inserted into it, by not expelling those objects.

But Rapey already told us, if you oppose "informed consent" for comatose women, *YOU ARE A MARXIST WITH AN IDEOLOGY OF HATE*.

Rapey: All men are rapists according to the ideology of hate [that rape culture exists] he [TWT] is preaching. And all sex is rape according to that fantasy. That particular lunacy being based on the Marxian notion of false consciousness

OC Weekly: Observers also expected that Haidl's two best buddies, Sheriff Mike Carona and Assistant Sheriff George Jaramillo might try to aid the accused rapists... Haidl paid monthly cash bribes to Carona and Jaramillo... In return, Carona and Jaramillo used back channels to sabotage [Jane] Doe's case by threatening that Haidl would fund an election challenger to District Attorney Tony Rackauckas if the case weren't dropped or transferred to juvenile court.

Nope, no rape culture there. You wouldn't wanna be a "Marxian", would you?

Diogenes said...

Rapey: you showed one man trying to cover up

Bullshit. You're a fucking liar. Numerous adults and teenagers were involved, including a millionaire, his private detectives, the sheriff, the assistant sheriff, a dozen defense lawyers, a former state Supreme Court justice, a retired FBI agent, a publicist, expert witnesses including a doctor, and teenagers from the high school.

This is what I posted and that Rapey read and denies:

But few people could've anticipated the extent to which Haidl's legal defense team—totaling more than a dozen defense lawyers, including a former state Supreme Court justice, a retired FBI agent and, get this, a publicist—would go. The defense team even got CBS show 48 Hours to broadcast a fact-ignoring feature sympathetic to their clients...

[Jane] Doe even felt afraid for her life. One night between the first hung-jury trial in 2004 and the second successful one in 2006, a female neighbor who looks like Doe was ambushed and severely beaten in the face and head with a rock. The assault abruptly ended, and the mysterious man fled after the victim yelled, "I'm not [Doe's first name]!"

"My neighbor is sure that I was the intended victim that night," Doe tells me... "She thinks that if I had been the one attacked, the guy wouldn't have stopped until I was dead."

..."After the assault, I wanted to escape. I didn't know who I was anymore. My innocence was gone. It was completely taken away from me. In one night, I had lost everything I knew. I was shunned and scorned. People treated me like I was the perpetrator..."

That's not the action of one man, you lying fuck.
