Praying for Rain

Here's a video from CNN of Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue praying for rain [Georgia's governor prays for rain on Capitol steps]. It's the sort of thing you might expect from a tribe of hunter-gathers about 50,000 years ago. It didn't work very well back then. I wonder if it will work today?

Interestingly, CNN noted, and NOAA confirms an 80% chance of rain tonight. Curious.

And what you'd expect if you've had any experience at all with southerners in the United States.

Oh yeah, I'll pray that it snows in Canada this winter. Bet you that my prayers will work! :-)

Thing is, they've been predicting the rain for several days before the prayer. The timing seems a little fortuitous. I'm from Alabama. We need the rain, badly. Our drought is actually a bit deeper than Georgia's. Our governor also prayed for rain a while back. It has rained since then, and statistically, it had to, but not nearly enough and we're deeper in the drought than before.

We got a wee bit of rain here in the DC area this week (it's been very dry here also), but don't know if anyone prayed for it, at least not publicly.

Might have been some sacrificed goats and chickens though.

Of course it will work. There will be some rain. He should have prayed for end of the drought by some specific date - say Feb 1 2008. But with the tropical season about over, the hopes of a major rain are fading for another year.

Atlanta and region will likely remain well below for at least another year

At least the price is right.

If it does rain how are you going to distinguish between a butterfly flapping its wings somewhere on the other side of the world, a 'causeless' quantum fluctuation in an air pocket, or omnipotent purposes encoded into background noise?

And not that bright tribe over in the next valley. The dumb ones who set up in the cave with the hibernating bears in the back.

At least the Native Americans had an interesting ritual to go along with praying for rain.
