The Great Muffin Joke Debate

Check out The Great Muffin Joke Debate at Cosmic Variance. I think it's funny. It's not ROTFLMFHO funny, but it does make me smile. John Tierney does not think it's funny. Is there a correlation between whether you think the joke is funny and whether you "get" irony and sarcasm?

Torbjörn Larsson said...: I think you are on to something - it is funny for me, but not hilariously so. Which is what I feel for most of irony and sarcasm. But there is a caveat - sometimes irony and sarcasm is the only appropriate response, and then it is usually deliciously funny. It's the kind of joke where my response depends on random things like my mood, and I think in this case the lead-up (ie. that I'm supposed to be analyzing my reaction) preempts whatever laugh reflex I might have had.; Thursday, March 15, 2007 3:44:00 PM
