Imagine the cable on your elevator breaks and you're in free fall for ten stories. What do you do? Maybe you should wait until the elevator is just about to hit the ground then jump up as high as you can?

I think I remember this idea from an old Bill Cosby routine, in which he also advocated sticking your finger into the barrel of a loaded gun pointed at you...another myth to bust?
Unless there's a window to see when you will hit bottom, jumping is a moot point.
However, some automatic pistols will not funcion properly if there is backwards pressure on the barrel. If you're in the situation anyway, why not give it a try?

Or you could try to fall the way they teach you in parachute training, to successively spread the load over different parts of the body.
