My working definition of a gene is based on a blog post from several years ago [What Is a Gene?].A gene is a DNA sequence that is transcribed to produce a functional product.This covers two types of genes: those that eventually produce proteins (polypeptides); and those that produce functional noncoding RNAs. This distinction is important when discussing what's in our genome.
