Do you think there will ever be a day that anti-junk DNA people actually learn literally anything about the junk DNA argument rather than just regurgitating the dogma that "Everyone blindly assumed the 98% of noncoding DNA in humans was useless until (x pet subject)"?
@Anonymous: No, I think that most anti-junk proponents aren't interested in the actual history or logic. They have formed an opinion based on beliefs or gut feelings that have nothing to do with the actual science and they are just looking for ways to promote those beliefs.
Either that or they are very stupid.
Or you could read this and save yourself the 90 dollars. Then you could spend the 90 dollars on something more interesting.

As a guideline for selecting the publications I read, I follow the First Law of Evolution: Never waste precious resources on producing mutations that you know in advance are non-adaptive or harmful.
What the heck is a "non-canonical protein"? The first sentence of the abstract is all I need to roll my eyes and find other ways to spend my time and money.

'Expanding the human proteome with microproteins and peptideins'.
The authors use the concepts 'non-canonical open reading frames (ncORFs)' and 'non-canonical peptides'. The distinction between “canonical”, “non-canonical”, and “other peptides” is defined in the methods.
Would the use of these concepts be a reason for you to ignore the publication?
This paper is referring to the by-products of a surprisingly noisy translation process. It has recently been found that all sorts of regions can be translated given the right circumstances and this has inspired the magical belief that the resulting proteins must be functional. This used to be a niche market, but they did find protein evidence for a few highly conserved human genes that were not previously annotated. In each new publication, these examples are recycled as evidence of the importance of the "dark proteome". With time, the theory has gained a lot of new adepts and papers about the amazing potential of these "genes" are now mainstream. Hence the book.
Michael, thanks for your clarification. I find the 'surprisingly noisy translation process', the 'non-canonical proteins', the 'dark proteome' and the way different scientists react to these phenomena really intriguing. My idea is that the 'surprisingly noisy translation process' could be advantageous in evolution. Evolution could benefit from noisy translation because it provides the material for natural selection. On the other hand, species that don't have any 'noisy translation', etc. wuld have difficulties to adapt (they are evolutionary inert),
