For some reason the title reminds me of "What Does the Fox Say." Oh well, PZ Myers is desperately interested in knowing which way Darwin walked when he took a stroll on the Sandwalk [An important historical question!].
I know which way PZ walked 'cause I led him!
Several years ago I was inspired by this photo. I met "Louis" who many of you may know from the Panda's Thumb AtBC and we took a photo in the same spot.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great place, Down House, and Louis and his family and me and mine had a nice pub lunch where Darwin sat many years ago. I highly recommend the pilgrimage.
Send me a picture and I'll post it.

PZ and I also had a nice lunch in the Downe pub opposite the cemetery. (I forget what it was called.)
Probably the Queen's Head. Louis and I had a nice Sunday lunch there and a couple of pints.
DeleteWe also discovered a digital watch tree:

Oh, anti-clockwise. Definitely. Nothing else makes sense in light of evolution.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. I think he walked COUNTER-clockwise even though he was English. :-)
DeleteOver at PZ's blog the head gardener at Down House replied: probably anti-clockwise (trans: counter-clockwise) based on historical notes and letters.
ReplyDeleteNo video, alas.
People should really use "widdershins" more to avoid the "anti" versus "counter" question, but also because it's such a nice word. I met it for the first time in William Golding's "The Spire" and have always liked it since. Widdershins on the Sandwalk would make a nice title for a short story about Darwin. If anybody wants to write one, they can have the title free of charge.
