Larry, a recommendation. Just 10 miles or so west of Las Vegas is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, which is easy to drive to, has a nice driving loop, off which are good trails. Very beautiful, and you don't even have to gamble. Here is a link to its Wikipedia page.
I second the motion. Aside from the geology, the birding is great there too. Red Rock Canyon is one of the few reasons I would ever consider going to Las Vegas. The Ethel M. chocolate factory is another (and aside from the candy, it has a great xeric garden).
I like cities. I like the hustle and bustle. I like the crowds, the street venders, the buskers, the bars, and the restaurants. I like the sights, the shows and the shopping. (We don't like gambling.)
Las Vegas is Disneyland for adults. That's why we came here! (We're going to the real Disneyland with our granddaughter on Friday.)
We had more fun having lunch at the Venetian with living statues, opera singers, and clowns, than we would ever have in Red Rock Canyon in 95° weather. I don't think they have Italian wine and gelato in Red Rock Canyon.
Today we're taking a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon where we'll have a champagne lunch on the canyon rim before flying home via Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. That's my idea of a nature outing.
I was in Vegas last February, and Red Rock Canyon was the highlight of the trip. Fabulous hiking, beautiful scenery, spectacular rocks. And if you hike up far enough, there are some amazing views from on high on Vegas, where you can really say what a weird little blot it is on the desert landscape.
You know that whole "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" thing doesn't apply to bloggers, right? Just saying...
ReplyDeleteI bet that’s right!

ReplyDeleteHiking? That's the thing where you do a lot of walking to nowhere carrying a sack on your back, right?
DeleteWe did something similar on Monday and Tuesday except that it was up and down the strip and there were lots of rest stops and bars and restaurants.
Different strokes for different folks, even if some of those folks have seriously warped views of what's fun.
DeleteHe probably would think all the rocks in Red Rock Canyon were junk scenery ...
DeleteHe would assume the rocks are non-functional. A real science stopper.
