Plants Are not Alive, Says PETA

From The Wichita Eagle Kansas (USA): George Tiller shooting prompts PETA ad campaign in Wichita.
A national animal rights group plans to erect billboards in Wichita urging people on both sides of the abortion debate to go vegetarian.

One version of the billboard says, "Pro-Life? Go Vegetarian." The other says, "Pro-Choice? Choose Vegetarian." Both feature a photo of three baby chicks.

Lindsay Rajt, campaign manager for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said the billboards were prompted by the recent shooting death of abortion doctor George Tiller, who was killed Sunday at his church.

"The discussion of the value of life is front and center right now in the public conversation," Rajt said.

"We think we would be irresponsible if we don't talk about how we're all guilty of extreme cruelty to animals every time we sit down to a meal that includes meat."

  2. You do know that animals eat plants, don't you? If you think that plants are worthy of protection, you should still go vegetarian.

If it's an attempt to show that vegetarians are hypocritical, it's a very bad attempt.

(That said, PETA are dishonest, hypocritical, anti-intellectual idiots. I'm vegetarian but those morons don't represent me!)

  4. A scene from Notting Hill:

Keziah: "No thanks, I'm a fruitarian."
    Max: "I didn't realize that."
William: "And, ahm: what exactly is a fruitarian?"
Keziah: "We believe that fruits and vegetables have feeling so we think cooking is cruel. We only eat things that have actually fallen off a tree or bush - that are, in fact, dead already."
William: "Right. Right. Interesting stuff. So, these carrots..."
    Keziah: "Have been murdered, yes."
William: "Murdered? Poor carrots. How beastly!"

  5. From The Wichita Eagle:

"While our hearts go out to the family and friends of George Tiller, we are hoping that these billboards will make those who are rightly shocked by his murder sit up and realize that behind closed doors, millions of animals are suffering every day, and that we as individuals can help to reduce the amount of violence and suffering in the world."

I see sympathy for George Tiller is mentioned in the dependent clause (the less important clause in the sentence) and the suffering of "millions of animals" is mentioned in the independent clause (the more important clause in the sentence.)

If Lindsay Rajt and PETA's ad are claiming that becoming a vegetarian would "help to reduce the amount of violence and suffering in the world," they should share this information with the UN.

My posting is not an attempt to show that all vegetarians are hypocritical.

It's an attempt to show that *some* vegetarians are stupid—especially the ones supporting PETA.

I think the point has been made very effectively.
