Looks very, very similar to a modern day positive pressure filtration unit. But the lack of visible threads on top is puzzling. What is it exactly?
It is a Seitz filter apparatus.

Looks like a primitive calorimeter bomb
Gotta be a filtration device for catching acid precipitates on either filter paper or nitrocellulose, but I can't believe you didn't have the cool glass ones. You're not *that* old.
