Turner was an English artist who did most of his work in the first half of the nineteenth century. I'm a fan of most of Turner's paintings but I particularly like the seascapes that show Napoleonic era battleships.

I did my first degree at Trinity College Dublin, just across the road from The Irish National Gallery. They had a fantastic collection of Turner paintings - not comparable to those in London but still wonderful. They had been donated about a century beforehand through a bequest that had a condition of viewing times imposed - they were only to be shown in the gallery during one or two Winter months - I guess in Ireland this meant you were fairly certain that they wouldn't be subject to fading damage from sunlight. In the meantime, of course, suitable safe lighting had been developed for the Gallery but they still insisted on keeping to the conditions of the will so December and January it remained.
