I'm attending the 70th birthday party for Bruce Alberts in San Francisco. Here's a picture of the authors of
Molecular Biology of the Cell. From left to right; Bruce Alberts, Alexander (Sandy) Johnson, Martin Raff, Keith Roberts, and Peter Walter. Julian Lewis couldn't be here.
I have become very familiar with the new edition of this book over the last semester! It is well written and well organised with outstanding diagrams (compare the diagrams with Lewin's Genes IX, for example, to see how good they are here).
ReplyDeleteThe sheer amount of detail can be a little intimidating, but that just made me feel grateful for the books' clarity (clarity and organisation can often suffer when multiple authors are involved in writing a textbook; see for instance the latest edition of Introduction to Genetic Analysis).
The only real annoyance was that they stuck the last five chapters on a DVD, although this is understandable due to the massive size of the book even without those extra pages.
This book will definitely be one I refer to often for years to come.
