John Wilkins of Evolving Thoughts has posted a goodbye tribute to John Howard [Beatles' ode to John Howard]. Like all bloggers over 40—or maybe 50—whenever you read the lyrics to "I'm Looking Through You" you can't help but sing along, can you?
For all you youngsters out there, here's how to sing the song ....
It's funny, hearing it in stereo and on good headphones or speakers after all these years how sharp and clear the song and production is. It's not the song of my youth, it's better. And it renews my respect for those young lads.
ReplyDeleteMy parents are huge Beatles fans, so despite the fact that I'm a teenager, I'm very familiar with their music. That song was always one I especially liked and I'm glad to see a couple of old dudes like you and John appreciate it too!

ReplyDeleteIt's funny, hearing it in stereo and on good headphones or speakersIIRC on the original vinyl record stereo meant that you hear the instruments on one side and the voices on the other? Maybe Apple/EMI remixed it in the meantime.
Ah god, watching them on Ed Sullivan; bringing the 45s home and singing along to them (badly) with your friends; feeling so bereft when you learned they'd broken up, and again when John died....
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't only music (though that was wonderful), it was part of something meaningful in your life.
My high school yearbook (1972) had quotes from "In My Life" thoughout, and I'm sure it was far from the only high school yearbook of that era to use the Beatles' lyrics as the most potent memorial to our youth that we could think of.
And sparc, yeah, you're right about the mixes.
My all-time favourite Beatles song. In fact, the perfect pop-song.
ReplyDelete...But have you heard the Steve Earle version? If anything, even more wonderful!
