Monday's Molecule #14

Name this molecule. You must be specific. We need the correct scientific name.

As usual, there's a connection between Monday's molecule and this Wednesday's Nobel Laureate. Bonus points for guessing Wednesday's Nobel Laureate(s).

  1. N-acetyl glucosamine (GlcNac). I'm guessing the Nobelist is Alexander Fleming, who discovered lysozyme as well as penicillin.

  2. It is not GlcNac. Besides, you haven't given the complete description of the molecule shown even if it were GlcNAc.

You're also wrong about the Nobel Laureate.

Other than that, you did good. :-)

  3. Ah well, I never was much good at remembering the "ups and downs" of the different sugars. Let's get out the textbook... It's N-acetyl galactosamine, right? (N-acetyl alpha-D galactosamine, is I assume the more complete description that you want.) (Or did I hit the trifecta? ;)
