Back in 1984 or so, after many years off the stage, she decided to get back into it and do a concert tour through Europe. Unsure of herself and her voice she decided to play it safe by starting the tour in Belgrade.
We drove her to tears, literally. 30,000 people every night, every single one of us singing along every word of every song well past midnight. They had to extend the Belgrade portion of the tour by a few additional nights in order to satisfy the interest.
I forgot to say that I went to the concert on the very first night of the tour, with my then girlfriend who I wooed by singing and playing "Diamonds and Rust" specially for her one summer night a few months before.
It all depends who your parents are/were. True, you are 13 years older than me, so when I was 5 or 6 and getting dragged to the Berkeley Greek Theatre, or up on top of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County to hear Joan, Pete (Seeger), and Phil (Ochs) you would have been 18 or 19 in University (probably wishing you had a draft card to burn). My all time favourite album is called "Noel," all Christmas songs. Sometime I will play my tape recording of Joan and my other Mentor, Bill Wood, jamming at a recording studio in Cambridge, MA. It was illegally released later on (sort of like a bootleg that you could buy).
Well, I'm 23 and I love her. I think it depends on how wide your horizon is. But if you're a well-informed person with diverse interest, sure do you know her. Then again I recently talked with a 17 years old who was convinced that James Blunt was exactly like Dylan. I highly doubted she had any closer idea who Dylan is (except that I mentioned him before). So, it all depends on who you are as another comment already said.
I am only 40 but I grew up on her music.
