Especially in small populations, these DNA expansions can accumulate via the powerful, non-adaptive influence of genetic drift. In multicellular organisms, which have smallish population sizes, it is more difficult for selection to remove mildly deleterious DNA accumulation.

Michael Lynch lays this out in his book 'The Origins of Genome Architecture'.Mike Whitehttp://thefinchandpea.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148773.post-61531616330783809442012-09-18T17:59:57.362-04:002012-09-18T17:59:57.362-04:00The article is ‘Refuge of spandrels’(1999, Current...The article is ‘Refuge of spandrels’(1999, Current Biology) and you can find it (free) here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982298704270Claudiu Bandeahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04987489537796352657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148773.post-46439229859883018892012-09-18T11:22:06.807-04:002012-09-18T11:22:06.807-04:00Can you point to an article by Brenner where he ta...Can you point to an article by Brenner where he talks about this?
