Goodby Penny!

Beginning yesterday the Canadian penny is being removed from circulation.

Everyone is supposed to round off to the nearest nickle. That's means that things that used to cost 16 or 17 cents will now cost 15 cents and things that used to cost 18 or 19 cents will now cost 20 cents.

  1. ...for cash purchases at least. Let's see if retailers round for electronic transactions as well.

  2. I'm glad to see the penny go but would be gladder to see the worst tv show ever, BIg Bang, GO!!!

  3. Electronic transactions are supposed to keep pennies. I'll be happy to see the penny go. A few years ago when we went to New Zealand we were, at first, concerned about how the rounding up and down would go and whether or not we'd spend too much time trying to figure out how to game the totals. Turns out it's just not a problem, and retailers can't really do it effectively since if they price at 7, that's good for them for one item, but if you get two of course it's in the customer's favor. So it's really a great overall step.

Now maybe in another 50 years or so the USA will go for it too. :)

  4. Okay, once again I've run into that thingie where posting with eht Google account option doesn't out my name, anthrosciguy, in there. It does with other blogs with similar Google account options, so who knows why.
