Tell Me Something I Don't Know

Chad Orzel is bored so he asked his readers to Tell him something he doesn't know. It's lot's of fun reading the comments on his blog so I though I'd ask for more.

Can you tell me something I don't know? I can assure you that there's plenty of opportunities.

Charcoal briquettes were invented by Henry Ford.

Francois Mitterand staged a phony assassination attempt on himself in 1959 while he was a Senator. His collaborator (the "assassin" who had fired at M's car) ratted him out.

In baseball, "batting out of order" results in an out charged to the batter who should have batted (and not the batter who improperly batted), a "ground rule double" is not a ground rule at all, and when the "infield fly rule" is invoked all force plays are removed.

Moose colonized North America through stepping stone pattern along the periglacial space, starting from Beringia.

The brooding period for fertilized eggs in some brachyuran crabs is between 1 or two 2 years, depending on temperature. Because they live at the thermal threshold, the number of degree days can dramatically effect brooding time.

Perfect game by relief pitcher:

On June 23,1917 in a game between the Red Sox and Senators, after walking the leadoff hitter, the Boston pitcher erupted in anger, was ejected, and threw a punch at the umpire, which would result in a ten-game suspension. Ernie Shore came into the game in relief, the baserunner was out stealing, and Shore retired all twenty-six batters he faced, for which he was credited with a perfect game until the 1990s.

The name of that hotheaded starting pitcher? Babe Ruth.

Dropping molten lead into water, where it freezes into funny/interesting shapes, and interpreting those shapes by candlelight for the purpose of fortune telling is a form of pareidolia practiced by Nordic tribes called Molybdomancy.

The proof that P != NP is probably wrong. See this article by Scott Aaronson at Shtetl-optimized.

Brent Butt's comedy "Corner Gas" was filmed in Rouleau, Saskatchewan, which stood in for the fictional town of Dog River.
