Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851)

Turner was an English artist who did most of his work in the first half of the nineteenth century. I'm a fan of most of Turner's paintings but I particularly like the seascapes that show Napoleonic era battleships.

John Pieret visited the Turner exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in some big city south of the border. He was mean kind enough to post pictures on his blog at Page Turner. It's hard to imagine how someone can have such good taste in art and such a bad

I did my first degree at Trinity College Dublin, just across the road from The Irish National Gallery. They had a fantastic collection of Turner paintings - not comparable to those in London but still wonderful. They had been donated about a century beforehand through a bequest that had a condition of viewing times imposed - they were only to be shown in the gallery during one or two Winter months - I guess in Ireland this meant you were fairly certain that they wouldn't be subject to fading damage from sunlight. In the meantime, of course, suitable safe lighting had been developed for the Gallery but they still insisted on keeping to the conditions of the will so December and January it remained.

I went to see the exhibit a couple of weeks ago, whilst on holiday in New York. Truly excellent.

I am reliably informed that such is a prerequisite for good taste in art.
